Transit Neptune in 10th House

  • by

While Neptune is in the 10th House, we’re likely to go through a period where we can’t get clear on what we’re doing with our lives. We’re no longer sure who we are or what we really want. What is our true calling? A constructive way to use this transit is to take the necessary time to engage in serious self-reflection, about our ambitions, and to ask ourselves what we want from life. At this time, it’s helpful to get in touch with someone trained to help people or to seek career guidance.

Neptune transiting through this house is often expressed in feelings of dissatisfaction with the work we have. We yearn for something more interesting and fulfilling: we want to pursue our dreams, instead of settling for what we have. This can be a good time to leave one job in favor of another, but we need to carefully examine the new direction we want to take, to ensure its soundness. With Neptune in the 10th House, there is a risk of fantasizing about career possibilities that are really impractical, unrealistic, or out of our reach. However, if our goals and objectives are rational, then it’s appropriate to quit our job and start the process of realizing our new ambitions.

Neptune doesn’t just mean delusion and uncertainty: it also brings us idealism and passion. Some people feel a kind of calling at this time, they have a vision of what they have come to do on this planet. We feel drawn to a certain type of work, which moves and interests us emotionally. We need a career that inspires faith in us, a job that satisfies the deep yearnings within us. However, under the influence of this transit, it’s necessary to examine our deepest motives, because with Neptune we can be moved by a desire for fascination and recognition. Are we choosing a career because we think it’s impressive and we like the effect it will have telling others what we do? Be careful, Neptune can arouse delusions of grandeur… if the aspiring artist seeks mainly fame and fortune, most likely Neptune – the dissolver of the ego – will frustrate their overtly selfish ambitions. However, if what interests artists most is to act as intermediaries through which ideas and images can flow and find concrete expression, the presence of Neptune in the 10th House will help them in the process.

There is probably no completely altruistic action. When we help or care for others, we may do so out of compassion, but there are likely other, more personal reasons as well, such as the need to be needed, or the apparent control of pain (whether ours or others’). If, when Neptune transits our 10th House, we feel drawn to professions centered on helping others, it’s advisable to examine our different levels of motivation. If our ego is too absorbed in the work, at the time of this transit we will encounter many problems in our task. This transit is often accompanied by setbacks and sacrifices in one’s career. Our ego may be deprived of the affirmation it seeks or deserves, as happens when we work hard and fervently on something for which we receive inadequate recognition and reward. Initially, at least, we are likely to have to give more than we receive in return. We may suffer disappointments at work that will “bring us down,” such as a colleague being given the promotion we expected. It can also coincide with the loss of a job, perhaps due to a layoff. This can be devastating, and not just for financial reasons, but also because losing a job means losing the right to identity and the sense of self-worth that it usually provides. Being fired can provoke anger and violence; we may not understand why this had to happen to us. Here we meet again with the dissolving effect of Neptune, which can disintegrate us so that something new can be born. When life falls apart in this way, it’s scary, and yet, falling apart can be the first phase of a rebuilding process.

The 10th House also describes our public reputation and the way others see us. This transit can signal a period in which there are popular sectors that idealize and revere us. Something we have captures the collective imagination and interest, or we become the living embodiment of a movement or force that sweeps us into sectors of society. Musicians, artists, fashion designers, actors, politicians, prophets, and social reformers may find themselves in the spotlight when Neptune transits their 10th House. As much as we enjoy the fame and public attention, we may not find it easy to handle this situation. Our personal life becomes fodder for public consumption, and we may feel stripped of our privacy and peace. Or else, the adulation we receive ends up distorting our ego out of all proportion, and when this happens, Neptune will not be far away, devising some means of knocking us off our pedestal.

In a few cases, this transit can also coincide with a period in which we become the focus of a scandal or end up publicly assuming the role of outcast or scapegoat. It’s not a good time to indulge in anything illegal or dishonest, as Neptune has its own way of exposing us, no matter how clever we think we are. When Neptune crosses the Midheaven and transits the 10th House, the growing influence that is the general meaning of the fourth quadrant can be correlated with a public or professional function that encompasses the interests of a community. If the scope of one’s destiny allows, this transit may coincide with a public position in defense of international, humanitarian, or transcendent values and activities. One can become a spokesperson for the ideals of one’s community. On the other hand, if the transit of the third quadrant built illusions concerning one’s true worth, then the transit of the 10th House may lead to a forced declaration. In fact, many people do not know the true value of their contribution to society and often believe they possess greater skills and knowledge than is really true. Conversely, it may happen that one’s value is not noticed or recognized, perhaps because one undervalues it oneself. In either case, during this transit of the 10th House, this exaggerated situation is likely to be unmasked. Indiscretions can leave one exposed to attack, and therefore one must beware of slander or scandal. It is important not to let dreamy idealism obscure the present need for an effort to achieve greater worth in the eyes of the world. One must be above suspicion at all times and very capable of fulfilling any task undertaken, for one misstep is enough to bring down the whole structure.
